Certifications that reflect how the fabric was grown and processed are a plus, as are construction materials that withstand regular washing.

Things to keep in mind

Breathable cotton protectors won’t feel as waterproof as plastic-backed covers, but they’re much more comfortable for everyday use. I recommend washing before first use and using a low-tox laundry detergent, like MamaSuds, to keep the fabric feeling fresh without unnecessary fragrance or residue. If you prefer a smoother feel for skin or hair, silk pillowcases can be layered on top of a cotton protector.
