This glossary is designed to help you better understand common ingredients found in food, beverages, supplements, beauty products, household products, and other everyday items that you may want to avoid or use in moderation.
I know first-hand how overwhelming ingredient research can feel. After spending the last few years researching ingredients, sourcing practices, manufacturing methods, potential contaminants, and environmental exposures, I created this resource to help simplify that process and support more informed choices based on your own health goals, sensitivities, values, and lifestyle.

Many ingredients in everyday products are legally permitted for use, but that doesn't necessarily mean they have been individually reviewed and approved by the FDA or that they are the best fit for everyone. Regulations can also allow ingredients to remain in use while safety concerns continue to be studied. This is why I look beyond whether an ingredient is simply “allowed” and also consider the research, manufacturing process, potential contaminants, exposure route, frequency of use, and cumulative exposure.
Some ingredients may also have additional concerns depending on how they are sourced, processed, manufactured, or purified. This may include pesticide residues, heavy metals, PFAS, residual solvents or monomers, plasticizers, or manufacturing byproducts such as 1,4-dioxane. These contaminants are not necessarily present in every product, which is why sourcing, manufacturing, purification, and testing matter.
Important Note About EWG Ratings
EWG uses different rating systems depending on the product category. Beauty and personal care ingredients in the Skin Deep database are typically rated on a numerical scale from 1–10, while some products may receive an EWG Verified designation. Household and cleaning products may use different scoring or grading systems.
Even if an ingredient has a low EWG rating or is found in an EWG Verified product, this does not automatically mean it meets the standards used in this glossary. Safety can still vary depending on manufacturing, formulation, potential contamination, exposure route, frequency of use, cumulative exposure, and individual sensitivities.
EWG is one helpful tool, but it is not the final word when evaluating an ingredient or product.
Rating System
1. Avoid
Ingredients with stronger concerns related to toxicity, endocrine or reproductive effects, harmful manufacturing contaminants, respiratory concerns, sensitization, environmental persistence, or other concerns that make them a poor fit for a stricter low-tox approach.
2. Use in Moderation
Ingredients that are generally considered lower concern but may still be worth considering because of sourcing, formulation, manufacturing, potential contamination, frequency or route of exposure, environmental concerns, or individual sensitivities.
An ingredient may also have a different recommendation during pregnancy or breastfeeding when the available evidence supports additional precautions.

A
Acacia Senegal Gum (Gum Arabic)
Use in Moderation
Acacia Senegal Gum is a natural gum obtained from the sap of the Acacia senegal tree. It is widely used in the food and beverage industry as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and thickening agent.
Commonly Found In: Food + Beverages + Supplements (soft drinks, candies, ice cream, baked goods, and certain pharmaceuticals)
Pregnancy: Acacia Senegal Gum is generally considered safe during pregnancy when consumed in smaller amounts. It is a natural substance and poses no significant risks. The immunotoxicity concern arises from certain compounds in the gum that may interfere with immune responses in sensitive individuals.

Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K)
Avoid
An artificial sweetener used to make foods and drinks taste sweet without adding much sugar or calories. Animal and laboratory studies have raised concerns about potential effects on the gut microbiome, glucose regulation, and metabolism, although human research remains limited. Ace-K can also cross the placenta, making repeated exposure during pregnancy worth considering. It is often combined with other artificial sweeteners in highly processed foods and drinks.

Pregnancy: The FDA has deemed Acesulfame Potassium safe for use during pregnancy when used in moderation. However, studies indicate that it crosses the placenta, and research on its safety during pregnancy remains limited.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8
Use in Moderation
A synthetic peptide used in anti-aging skincare to help reduce the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles. The peptide itself is considered relatively low concern, but EWG flags high contamination concerns because commercial preparations may contain preservatives or impurities such as phenoxyethanol and certain parabens. This does not mean these contaminants are present in every product, so sourcing, purity testing, and formulation quality matter.
Commonly Found In: Beauty (anti-aging serums, eye creams, moisturizers, wrinkle treatments)
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Limited pregnancy-specific data. The peptide itself has not been identified as a significant reproductive concern, but formulation quality and potential contaminants should be considered.

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3
Use in Moderation
A synthetic peptide used in hair and scalp products to help support the appearance of fuller, thicker hair. Safety data is limited. In concentrated form, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 is classified as a skin, eye, and respiratory irritant and may be harmful if swallowed.
Commonly Found In: Beauty ( Hair products such as Shampoos, conditioners, and serums)
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Some products containing Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 also use red clover extract, which contains estrogen-like plant compounds and may not be recommended during pregnancy. Check the full formula rather than assuming the peptide itself has the same concern.

Acid Protease
Use in Moderation
An enzyme that breaks down protein into amino acids and peptides. It may be derived from Aspergillus niger (a type of mold). It may cause issues for those with mold sensitivities.
Commonly Found In: Food + Beverage (dietary supplements, digestive enzymes)
Pregnancy: Usually tolerated well during pregnancy. Avoid it if you are sensitive to mold.

Acrylates Copolymer
Use in Moderation
A synthetic polymer used to thicken products, create a film, and help makeup, sunscreen, and hair products stay in place. The finished polymer itself is considered lower-concern, but how it is made is worth knowing about. Small amounts of leftover chemicals from manufacturing may remain, including acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, and other acrylate monomers. These residual chemicals can irritate the skin, eyes, or lungs, and some acrylates can cause allergic skin reactions. The amount left behind depends on how well the ingredient is manufactured and purified.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: No specific reproductive or developmental concerns have been established for Acrylates Copolymer at typical cosmetic use levels. Use in moderation, especially with sprays or products that may be inhaled.

Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer
Use in Moderation
A synthetic polymer used to thicken and improve the texture of skincare and beauty products. The ingredient itself is considered lower concern, but how it is made is the bigger issue. Depending on the manufacturing process, it may contain residual benzene, n-hexane, cyclohexane, ethyl acetate, acrylic acid, or acrylate monomers. Benzene is a known carcinogen linked to leukemia and other blood cancers, while n-hexane can damage the nervous system with higher or repeated exposure. Other residual solvents and monomers may irritate the skin, eyes, or lungs. These contaminants are not necessarily present in every product, which is why manufacturing and purity testing matter.
Commonly Found In: Beauty (moisturizers, baby lotions, sunscreens, hairs styling products)
Pregnancy: Due to contamination concerns this should be avoided.

Acrylic Acid Homopolymer
Use in Moderation
A synthetic polymer that mainly works as a binder, emulsion stabilizer, and film former. It helps hold product ingredients together and improves texture and performance.Generally considered low toxicity to humans, though it can cause skin, eye, or respiratory irritation if handled in powder form. The bigger concern is environmental, as it is not readily biodegradable and may persist in waterways.

Acrylic Polymer
Avoid
A general term for synthetic polymers used to bind ingredients together, create a film, improve texture, or make products more water-resistant. The finished polymer itself may be lower concern, but some acrylic polymers can contain leftover acrylate monomers from manufacturing. These may include chemicals such asethyl acrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or other acrylates, depending on the specific polymer. Some acrylates can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs or trigger allergic skin reactions, and certain starting materials have raised cancer concerns. Synthetic acrylic polymers are also slow to break down in the environment.
Commonly Found In: Household + Beauty (adhesives, paints, coatings, nail products, makeup, sunscreens, hair products)
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Avoid when possible, especially in products that can be inhaled. The main concern is potential leftover chemicals from manufacturing rather than the finished polymer itself.

Active Yeast
Use in Moderation
A common type of yeast, also known as baker's yeast, commonly used in baking. It can be GMO, so look for non-GMO or organic varieties.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe when consumed in food amounts. However, if you have a yeast sensitivity or allergy, consult your healthcare provider.

Agar
Use in Moderation
Naturally made from red algae (a type of seaweed). Used as a plant-based emulsifier and thickener. Possible contamination of heavy metals and pollutants, as well as contaminants during processing. Avoid if you have intestinal inflammation, blockages, or constipation. Not drinking enough water with this supplement can cause blockages in the intestines and esophagus.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Limited data suggests no known risk. However, some sources advise caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to contamination. Seek information about third-party testing before use to ensure there are no contaminants.

Agave

Derived from a natural source but undergoes a lengthy refining process. It is processed through the liver, which can overwhelm the liver and lead to health issues like fatty liver disease. While it is low in sugar, it is high in fructose.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: likely unsafe as it could cause uterine contractions and can induce a miscarriage or premature birth.

Alcohol Denat. (Denatured Alcohol)
Use in Moderation
A fast-evaporating alcohol commonly used to improve product texture, enhance ingredient penetration, and help products dry quickly. While considered safe for cosmetic use, higher concentrations and frequent use may contribute to skin dryness, irritation, increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and skin barrier disruption, particularly in individuals with dry, sensitive, or compromised skin.
Commonly Found In: Beauty (facial mists, toners, serums, sunscreens, foundations, setting sprays, perfumes)
Pregnancy: Avoid if experiencing sensitivity, eczema, or other skin inflammation
Source: Synthetic or naturally derived ethanol that has been denatured with additives to make it unsuitable for consumption.

Alkyl Benzoate
Avoid
A synthetic ester derived from benzoic acid, used in cosmetics as an emollient and texture enhancer. It can cause skin irritation and may harm the skin's protective layer, making it more likely to absorb other toxic chemicals.
Commonly Found In: Beauty + Household ( Toners, serums, hairsprays, and cleaning products)
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Limited data; however, if pregnant and have sensitive skin or chronic autoimmune issues, it would be advised to avoid this as it allows other ingredients to absorb more so into the skin that could be more toxic.

Alkyl C12-14 Dimethylethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride
Avoid
A type of quaternary ammonium compound ("quat") often used as a disinfectant. It is toxic to aquatic life and can cause skin and eye irritation in humans. Found in products like Clorox Disinfecting Bleach.
Commonly Found In: Household
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Not considered safe. Studies suggest quats may impact fertility and disrupt hormones. Avoid during pregnancy if possible.

Alkyl C12-18 Dimethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride
Avoid

Alkyl Dimethyl Amine Oxides (C10-16)

A surfactant commonly found in shampoos and conditioners. It can be a skin irritant. Studies have shown acute toxicity to aquatic life.

Avoid
Surfactants used in paints that are hormone disruptors. Used in products like paints and cleaning products. They are known hormone disruptors, meaning they can interfere with endocrine (hormone) systems. This can pose a risk to both pregnant individuals and developing fetuses.

Aluminum
Avoid
A naturally occurring metal used in many different forms in cookware, food packaging, antiperspirants, medications, and other everyday products. The concern depends heavily on the form of aluminum, dose, and route of exposure. Higher levels of aluminum can build up in the body and affect the nervous system, bones, and other organs, although normal everyday exposure has not been proven to cause diseases such as Alzheimer's. Exposure may also increase when aluminum cookware or foil comes in contact with hot, acidic, or salty foods, which can increase leaching.

Aluminum Hydroxide
Avoid
A form of aluminum used as a colorant in beauty products. It has been associated with potential toxicity, especially with prolonged exposure. As a neurotoxin, it may pose risks to the nervous system, and its use during pregnancy is not recommended due to concerns about aluminum toxicity.

Ammonium Hydroxide
Avoid
An ingredient made from ammonia in water, found in cement and floor strippers. It is poisonous and can cause organ toxicity, heart failure, skin burns, and allergic reactions.
Commonly Found In: Beauty (Hair dye, facial moisturizers, mascara, eyeliner, etc.)
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Avoid. Due to its potentially harmful effects, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES)
Avoid
A cleansing and foaming surfactant made through ethoxylation, a process that uses ethylene oxide. The ingredient itself can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs, but the bigger concern is what may be left behind from manufacturing. Ethoxylated ingredients may contain trace 1,4-dioxane if they are not properly purified. 1,4-Dioxane is considered a likely human carcinogen and is not intentionally added, so it would not normally appear on the ingredient label. EWG also flags high contamination concerns for this ingredient.

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)
Use in Moderation
A cleansing and foaming surfactant used to remove dirt and oils. It can be harsh on the skin and may cause dryness, eye irritation, or skin barrier disruption, especially with frequent use or in more concentrated formulations. Unlike Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, ALS is not ethoxylated, so 1,4-dioxane contamination from ethoxylation is not the main concern.

Amyloglucosidase
Avoid
A form of the digestive enzyme amylase. It is derived from the fungus Aspergillus niger (a type of black mold). Should be avoided by those with mold sensitivities.

Pregnancy: Use with caution, especially for individuals with mold sensitivities.

Annato
Use in Moderation
A plant-derived coloring made from the seeds of the annatto tree and used to give foods a yellow, orange, or red color. Annatto itself is generally considered lower concern, but commercial extracts can be processed using solvents, oils, water, or alkaline processing. Some concentrated annatto extracts have shown weak mutagenic activity in laboratory testing, suggesting impurities or other components in certain extracts may contribute to the concern. Processing method, purity, and sourcing therefore matter.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Use in moderation. If you experience headaches or allergic reactions, or have autoimmune issues, this should be limited or avoided.

Artificial Flavors (Unidentified)
Avoid
A broad term for synthetic flavoring chemicals added to foods and drinks to create or enhance flavor. The label may simply say “artificial flavor” without telling you every chemical, carrier, solvent, or processing aid used to make the flavor mixture. Not every artificial flavor is proven toxic, but the lack of transparency makes it difficult to know exactly what you are being exposed to. They are also most commonly found in heavily processed foods that contain multiple other additives.

Ascabiol
Use in Moderation
A topical agent used in personal care products for its antimicrobial properties. It is commonly used in products aimed at controlling acne and preventing skin infections. While effective, some individuals with sensitive skin may experience irritation.

Ascorbic Acid
Use in Moderation, Avoid if Pregnant
A synthetic version of vitamin C that is commonly added to food and beverage products to replenish Vitamin C or preserve the color and freshness of products. It is typically made from GMO corn syrup, corn starch, or a combination of both, and processed with the chemical acetone (found in nail polish remover). When consumed in large amounts, it can cause headaches, stomach upset, and kidney stones. Look for non-GMO.

Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C Palmitate)
Use in Moderation
A fat-soluble form of vitamin C made by combining ascorbic acid with palmitic acid and used as an antioxidant in foods, supplements, and skincare. The ingredient itself is generally considered low concern, but sourcing and processing can vary. Commercial ascorbic acid may be produced from corn-derived glucose, which can originate from GMO crops unless verified otherwise, while the palmitic acid portion may come from palm or other plant oils. EWG also flags concerns related to biochemical or cellular-level changes.
