Important note on all-purpose cleaners

All-purpose cleaners are used across many surfaces and are often sprayed and wiped rather than fully rinsed away. Because of that, I’m mindful of what’s doing the cleaning and what’s left behind on counters, sinks, and other high-touch areas.

For everyday cleaning, I look for products that rely on simple, effective cleaning agents rather than ingredients designed to disinfect, coat surfaces, or mask odors.

What I avoid in all-purpose cleaners

For this category, I avoid disinfectant-style ingredients like quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), harsh solvents such as glycol ethers and petroleum-based solvents, and preservatives like methylisothiazolinone (MIT), which are commonly linked to skin and respiratory irritation.

I also steer clear of ethoxylated ingredients (often listed as PEGs or “-eth”), SLS/SLES, dimethicone, and fragrance blends that aren’t clearly disclosed. These ingredients are often added to create shine, slip, foam, or scent, but they aren’t necessary for effective everyday cleaning and can leave behind residue or affect indoor air quality.

What I look for instead are simpler formulas that rely on soap-based or plant-derived cleaning agents, with transparency and fewer unnecessary additives.

MamaSuds All-Purpose Cleaner is a castile-soap-based spray made with saponified olive oil, aloe vera juice, water, citric acid, and essential oils. It’s designed for routine cleaning tasks like wiping down counters, sinks, and other everyday surfaces.

The cleaning power comes from a traditional soap base rather than solvent-heavy ingredients, which makes this an easy go-to for regular use. It does have a scent from essential oils, but it’s not overpowering or chemical-smelling and doesn’t linger after cleaning.

What I like

I like that this cleaner relies on a soap-based formula instead of disinfectants or solvents.

I also appreciate the straightforward ingredient list, which aligns with my goal of avoiding MIT, dimethicone, and unnecessary fragrance systems.

It works well for daily cleaning and feels comfortable to use regularly without overwhelming scent or residue.

Things to keep in mind

This formula contains essential oils (including clove and cinnamon leaf), which can be irritating for some people with sensitivities. If that’s you, I recommend spot testing and using good airflow the first few times.
