Yarok Feed Your Do Styling Whip

Important note on hair styling products

For leave-in hair styling products, I’m mindful of what sits on the hair and scalp throughout the day. Styling products are often where brands rely on synthetic hold agents, fragrance systems, and coating ingredients to create texture or control. I look for options that style effectively without buildup or unnecessary scalp exposure.

What I avoid and what I look for in styling products

In hair pomades, creams, and styling whips, I avoid undisclosed synthetic fragrance blends, petroleum-derived styling polymers, and silicone-based ingredients like dimethicone that coat the hair rather than support it. I also avoid harsh preservatives commonly found in conventional styling products, including MIT/MCI and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, as well as drying alcohols used to create fast hold.

What I look for instead are plant-based butters, waxes, oils, and botanical extracts that provide structure, definition, and moisture without relying on synthetic film-formers.

Product description

Ingredients

Shea butter, water, candelilla wax, olive oil, emulsifying wax, guar gum, potassium sorbate (plant-sourced, kosher), hemp seed oil, xanthan gum, brown rice syrup, May Chang essential oil, apple cider vinegar, and a wide blend of organic botanical extracts including calendula, marshmallow root, green tea, rosemary, thyme, oregano, burdock root, horsetail, sage, lavender, peppermint, cinnamon bark, and lemon peel.

What I like

  • EWG rates this product a 2.

  • Shea butter for moisture and softness

  • Candelilla wax for light, flexible hold

  • Olive oil and hemp seed oil to support hair and scalp moisture

  • A wide blend of organic herbal extracts that support hair health

  • Fully disclosed essential oils rather than undisclosed synthetic fragrance

  • Soft, touchable hold without buildup

Things to keep in mind

This formula contains potassium sorbate, which is an ingredient I often avoid unless it’s necessary or clearly sourced. In this case, it’s listed as plant-sourced and kosher, which I consider a better option than conventionally manufactured synthetic versions, especially in a water-containing, botanical formula where preservation is needed.

It also contains essential oils. Even when fully disclosed, essential oils can be sensitizing for some people and can carry trace contaminants depending on sourcing and processing, which is why I prioritize brands that use third-party testing and ingredient quality standards to help minimize contaminants.

Because this is a concentrated styling product, a small amount goes a long way.
