Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Mattress
Important Note on This Category
When I evaluate mattresses for my low-tox marketplace, one of my primary concerns is off-gassing.
Conventional mattresses often contain polyurethane foam, memory foam, synthetic adhesives, vinyl components, and chemical flame retardants. Many of these materials can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially when new. That “new mattress smell” people notice is often off-gassing from synthetic foams and adhesives.
Because we spend hours every night sleeping in close proximity to these materials, I prioritize mattresses designed to minimize chemical emissions and indoor air exposure.
This is where certifications and material transparency become especially important.
What I Avoid
• Polyurethane foam and memory foam
• Chemical flame retardants
• Vinyl/PVC waterproofing layers
• Synthetic or blended latex
• Heavy adhesive use
• Undisclosed material blends
• Formaldehyde or high-VOC materials
These materials are commonly associated with higher emissions and indoor air concerns.
What I Look For
• Certified organic cotton and wool
• Certified organic latex
• Steel coil support systems instead of foam cores
• Wool as a natural fire barrier
• Low-emission certifications
• Full material disclosure
• No polyurethane or memory foam
When I’m looking to reduce off-gassing risk, I want materials that are naturally low-emission and verified by third-party testing.
Product Description
The Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Mattress is designed without polyurethane foam, memory foam, or chemical flame retardants — which is one of the main reasons it stands out to me.
Instead of synthetic foam cores, it uses encased steel coils for structural support. Organic cotton and wool are used throughout, and organic wool acts as a natural fire barrier rather than relying on chemical treatments.
Optional comfort layers include certified organic latex, which is generally considered a more stable and lower-emission alternative to synthetic foam.
The mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified and UL Formaldehyde Free Verified, meaning it has been tested for low chemical emissions and indoor air quality standards.
For someone prioritizing reduced off-gassing, those certifications matter.
Certifications
• GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
• GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard)
• MADE SAFE® Certified
• GREENGUARD Gold Certified
• UL Formaldehyde Free Verified
These certifications verify organic sourcing and low emissions, which directly address indoor air and off-gassing concerns.
What I Like
I like that this mattress avoids the most common sources of mattress off-gassing: polyurethane foam, memory foam, and chemical flame retardants.
I appreciate that emissions are tested and verified rather than assumed.
The modular design also allows you to replace layers over time instead of discarding the entire mattress, which adds longevity.
And because the materials are breathable — organic cotton, wool, coils — the mattress tends to regulate temperature better than many synthetic foam options.
Things to Keep in Mind
Even certified low-emission mattresses can have a mild natural scent when first unpacked. Organic wool and latex have their own natural smell, which is different from chemical off-gassing but still noticeable to some people.
This mattress is an investment.
And while organic latex is generally well-tolerated, anyone with latex sensitivities should confirm comfort before selecting that layer option.
