Pivoting to a Low-Tox Lifestyle: A Simple Guide to Making Safer Choices

Living a low-tox lifestyle is all about small, intentional choices that can help to reduce our exposure to harmful chemicals. Whether it is the food you eat, the products applied to your skin, or kitchen appliances, every decision matters. 

This guide will help you transition smoothly, and I'll also share my favorite low-tox products so far this year.

Consider What is Being Put in Your Body

Take a moment to think about food. Do you consume a lot of packaged foods? Many processed products contain additives, preservatives, and synthetic chemicals that can disrupt your hormones and impact your overall health. 

If you do consume large amounts of packaged foods, it is time to make a few simple changes.

Prioritize Organic Produce 

Check for USDA Organic or Certified Organic labels to avoid pesticides and genetically modified ingredients. 

If you are on a budget and can't always buy organic, use a simple DIY wash with a 1:3 ratio of white vinegar to water to help remove pesticide residues. Peeling vegetables can also help to reduce exposure to contaminants.

Limit Processed Foods 

Choose whole foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, and organic grains whenever possible. Remember, our bodies are not made to handle all of these harsh preservatives in foods that can “remain fresh” for years in cans and packages. 

Filter Your Water 

Tap water may contain contaminants like chlorine, lead, and fluoride. You can purchase inexpensive test strips to check your water quality and determine if a filter is needed — and what specific kind would be best for your needs.

Check for Certifications 

Look for labels that ensure product safety and quality in addition to a few certified labels to add to your cart. 

Certified Organic:

Applies to food and ensures it's free from synthetic pesticides and GMOs.

Certified Grass Fed:

Ensures that animal products come from livestock raised on a grass-fed diet without synthetic additives or hormones

NSF Certified:

Can apply to skincare, supplements, and water filtration products, ensuring they meet strict health standards. 

Certified Made Safe:

Means a product is free from known toxic chemicals. 

What Are You Putting on Your Skin?

Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs much of what you apply — especially the armpits! Nearly all of what is put on your armpits will be absorbed. If you only switch one thing, it should be your deodorant. 

Many mainstream beauty and personal care products contain parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and other harmful chemicals. Follow these simple steps to clean up your routine.

Read Ingredient Lists

Avoid ingredients like parabens, sulfates, PEGs, artificial fragrances, and heavy metals.

Use Trusted Resources

The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep Database and Mamavation’s Facebook Group are great tools for checking product safety.

Choose Non-toxic Beauty Brands

Brands with certifications like EWG Verified or NSF Certified are great options.

Swap Out Daily Essentials
