What Low-Tox Living Means

Low-tox living focuses on reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals and unnecessary synthetic additives commonly found in many conventional products. These may include ingredients like endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and undisclosed fragrances that can build up in the body and impact long-term health. It doesn’t mean eliminating every toxin—that’s not realistic in today’s world. It’s about awareness, progress, and making better choices where you can. Each small change adds up, and it all starts with transparency and education.

For me, it’s a lifestyle rooted in mindful choices, simplicity, and connection to what truly matters. There are ingredients I avoid and others I use sparingly, and I know many of you are on that same journey—learning, adjusting, and finding what works best for your body and home.

My Marketplace Standards

Feather & Nest’s Low-Tox Marketplace is built on transparency and trust. I evaluate every product based on ingredient disclosure, manufacturing integrity, and overall impact on your health and environment.

I exclude or avoid products containing:

  • Parabens

  • BHT or BHA

  • Phthalates

  • Bisphenols (BPA, BPS, BPF)

  • Carcinogens and chemicals of high concern

  • Paraffin oil, paraffin wax, petrolatum, or liquid paraffinum

  • Petroleum-derived ingredients

  • Polyethylene glycol compounds (PEGs)

  • Ethoxylated ingredients (SLES or ingredients ending in “-eth”) that may contain 1,4-dioxane contamination

  • Methylisothiazolinone (MI) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI)

  • Toxic flame retardants

  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives

  • Harmful artificial colors and dyes

  • Undisclosed or toxic fragrant ingredients

  • Credo Beauty Standards — sets one of the most comprehensive clean-beauty benchmarks, banning or restricting 2,700+ ingredients and requiring full fragrance disclosure.

  • USDA Organic — certifies that ingredients are grown and processed without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

These organizations offer helpful frameworks and transparency tools. While certifications and testing do not guarantee a product is completely free of all contaminants, they provide valuable guidance when identifying safer, more responsibly made options.
