Earth Mama Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 40
Important note on kid-friendly sunscreen
When I’m choosing sunscreen for kids, I stick with mineral-based options and ingredient lists that are clear and straightforward. Sunscreen is something we use often, so I like formulas that feel effective and practical without relying on chemical filters or mystery additives.
What I avoid in sunscreen
When it comes to sunscreen, I personally avoid chemical UV filters such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, and avobenzone. I also skip spray sunscreens, since I prefer a more controlled, even application. Beyond UV filters, I avoid added fragrance blends, parabens, ethoxylated ingredients (PEGs and “-eth” ingredients), and preservatives or stabilizers that aren’t necessary in mineral formulas. For mineral sunscreens, I look for clear labeling and choose to avoid nano-sized mineral filters, preferring zinc oxide that’s clearly disclosed and used as the primary active ingredient.
What I look for in sunscreen
I look for mineral sunscreens that use zinc oxide as the active ingredient, offer broad-spectrum protection, and have a simple base made with oils, butters, and waxes. For active days, I also like when water resistance is clearly stated, since it helps the sunscreen hold up better during play and sweat.

What I like
I like that it’s zinc-oxide-only, the ingredient list stays simple, and the base is made with organic oils and waxes rather than extra fillers.
Things to keep in mind
This is a richer, oil-and-wax-based mineral sunscreen, so it can take a little more time to rub in than lighter lotions. Applying in smaller sections helps ensure even coverage, and reapplication is still necessary on long outdoor days.
Quick calendula note: Calendula sometimes gets flagged in conversation due to contamination concerns that are mainly discussed around oral use and sourcing. In skincare, it’s typically used in small amounts and is generally well tolerated, but if your child has very reactive skin, it’s a good ingredient to be aware of.
