Beginner’s Guide to Low-Tox Living

If you’re trying to simplify what you’re using day to day and make more intentional choices without overcomplicating everything, this is a good place to start.

How I think about this

I focus on what I use regularly and make changes that feel practical.

Paying attention to ingredients and simplifying what I use made the biggest difference.

Where to start

If you’re not sure where to begin, I keep it simple and focus on what I’m using most often.

From there, I look at what I’m putting on my body, then what touches my food, and then my home environment.

What I avoid

When checking labels, these are a few things I look out for:

  • Fragrance or parfum (can include undisclosed ingredients)

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)

  • PEGs or ingredients ending in “-eth” (like ceteareth or laureth)

  • Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI)

  • Artificial dyes or colorants (FD&C colors)

Start simple and build from there

Focus on what you use consistently, make a few changes, and build from there.
